Maplewood Elementary

2024-2025 School Calendar & Student Handbook

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year.  I hope you have had a wonderful summer.  We have exciting things planned for the upcoming school year, and we are thrilled your family is part of the Maplewood tradition.

Safety is a top priority at school.  We work hard to ensure children are safe at all times while on our campus.  We utilize our exterior fencing and during regular school hours the gates remain closed and locked.  Also, all classroom doors, including the front office door, remain locked during the school day.  When visiting our campus, we ask that all visitors check in through the front office.  Parents and visitors must check in with their driver’s license or state ID.  Visitors will be provided a nametag to wear for the duration of their visit.  I send out weekly voicemail messages each Sunday evening at 6:45 p.m. to remind families of news and events occurring that week.  Please make sure that contact information and authorized pick-up information is correct and updated in SKYWARD Family Access.  If we do not have your phone number on record, you will not receive these calls.

We will also routinely schedule practice drills during the course of the year, including fire, severe weather, and Code Red drills.  In order to meet the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act mandates, an Active Assailant Drill will be conducted every month while school is in session. This is to ensure students and staff members know what to do in the event of an emergency.

Skyward Family Access will return this year.  If you have not taken advantage of this wonderful opportunity, please stop by the school to get “signed on.”  Parents can review grades, schedules, and standardized test scores on the portal.  Students will also be able to access their student portal utilizing a username and password that will be sent home at the beginning of the year.

Be involved in your child’s education by being part of our school.  I encourage parents to regularly attend conferences, parent meetings, and participate in class and school activities.  We love volunteers at school, so be sure to complete a new volunteer application online.

Parents and students are asked to review the pages of this handbook, so they will become acquainted with the policies of our school.  I urge all parents to work closely with the school, so that together we can provide the best educational environment for our students.  If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.  We are ready to work “Side By Side For Success.”

Mrs.  Chrissy Carter, Principal

. DiSanza

MISSION STATEMENT

Maplewood is a school where all children can learn and develop to their fullest potential. Each student’s success is based upon the school, home, and community working side by side to ensure that each child will become a life-long learner and develop a sense of self-worth.

ACCIDENTS

When children are in an active environment, accidents are often unavoidable. Many times parents cannot be reached. It is very important the school has updated phone numbers for emergencies. If parents cannot be reached during medical emergencies, trained medical personnel will transport the child to a medical facility at parent expense.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

In the event your child is injured during regular school hours, any medical expenses incurred are the responsibility of the parents. The School Board of Marion County does not carry insurance on students. Parents are encouraged to consider purchasing optional school time or extended 24 hour student accident insurance, offered each year through an outside vendor, for a nominal cost. Additional information on this optional coverage is available on the District homepage or by contacting your child’s school.

ANIMALS IN THE CLASSROOM

During the year, live animals may be used in our classrooms to enhance the curriculum and help teach responsibility and sensitivity to other living things. If you have concerns, please contact the school. Because of liability, parents and guardians are not allowed to bring animals on the school campus.

ASBESTOS

The school has received a complete asbestos inspection and the report is on file in the Principal’s office.  The file is open to the public.

ATTENDANCE

Daily Attendance

Good attendance is most important for satisfactory progress.  Students are expected to be in school except in the cases of emergency, illness or school-approved absences.  Steps to follow when absent are the following:

  1. Florida Statute 232.10 requires a signed written explanation of the child’s absence. Please send in a note to the school on the first day the student returns indicating the reason for the absence.Excused absences include personal illness, death in the family, doctor appointments (Florida Statute 232.0225 requires documentation from a physician if the absence is due to a medical appointment), or trips authorized in advance by the principal. The principal may approve up to 5 days total for advanced absences throughout the year.Advanced absences will not be approved for students who have already accrued 5 or more excused or unexcused absences. Advanced forms are available in the guidance department.
  2. A doctor’s statement is required for 5 or more days absent.
  3. To be excused from P.E., the student must bring a signed doctor’s statement.
  4. For extended absences, twenty-four hour notice is required prior to picking up homework.Students are required to make up work they have missed.

Tardies/Early Checkouts

Students are expected to be here and on time each day.  When students are tardy or checked out early, they are missing vital academic instruction.  The school day begins at 7:35. Any student arriving after 7:35 will be considered tardy and must be escorted by parent/guardian to the main office to check in and receive a tardy slip before being admitted to class. Because the end of the day is so important, students will not be dismissed after 1:40 pm unless a note has been sent that morning alerting the teacher of the early check out…or in the event of an emergency.  Checking students out early for convenience, or to beat the traffic is unfair to the teachers and school staff who are preparing for the busiest time of the day. Please work with us.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM

The Provision 2 breakfast program invites all students to eat free of charge. Breakfast will START being served at 7:05 a.m. Breakfast will STOP being served at 7:35 a.m. This will ensure that class instruction begins promptly.  If your child wants to participate in this program, he/she must be here before 7:35 a.m.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is available to eligible students as determined by MCPS transportation guidelines. Bus transportation is provided to the parent at no cost and is available to the child as long as the child abides by the rules of safety and proper behavior. Bus privileges may be withdrawn for serious and repeated violations. Suspension from riding the bus does not mean suspension from school. Students are still obliged, under state law, to attend school.

Glass containers, animals and unusually large projects are not allowed on the bus. Label all book bags and clothing as these items are often left on the bus. State and county bus rules and regulations are posted on each bus. Please review the following rules with your child:

  1. Be on time. The bus cannot wait.
  2. Stand off the roadway while waiting for the bus.
  3. Keep seated at all times while the bus is moving.
  4. Keep arms and hands inside the bus.
  5. Do not talk with the driver while he/she is driving.
  6. The driver must be obeyed at all times.
  7. Classroom conduct is to be observed on the bus.
  8. The driver or school administrator has the right to assign seats on the bus.
  9. No eating, drinking, or gum chewing on the bus.
  10. Absolute silence at all railroad crossings is required.
  11. Balloons, flowers, and large items will not be permitted on the bus at any time.

STUDENTS USING A DIFFERENT METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION HOME MUST HAVE A WRITTEN NOTE FROM THE PARENT/GUARDIAN FOR EACH OCCURRENCE. We cannot change the manner in which your child goes home over the phone or via email.

DURING THE FIRST FOUR DAYS OF SCHOOL, A STUDENT MUST RIDE THE BUS IN THE MORNING TO BE ABLE TO RIDE THE BUS IN THE AFTERNOON.  WRIST BANDS WILL BE ASSIGNED TO EACH BUS RIDER.  THESE ARE TO REMAIN ON THEIR WRIST DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL.

If you have questions about transportation, please call the Transportation Help Line at 352-671-7050.

CHILD ABUSE

As teachers and school officials, we are ethically and legally obligated to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.  Professionals in daily contact with children are the first line of defense against child abuse and neglect.  Suspected cases of abuse or neglect are reported to the following toll free number:

1-800-962-2873

COMPUTERS

Computers at school are for educationally approved purposes only. STUDENTS SHALL NOT BRING PERSONAL SOFTWARE TO SCHOOL TO USE ON SCHOOL COMPUTERS.  Parents are strongly encouraged to provide their children with their own personal set of earphones.

PARENT COMMUNICATION

Every child benefits from good parent-teacher relationships. Conferences are helpful in keeping the lines of communication open. Conferences may be requested by the parent, teacher or administration and scheduled at a mutually convenient time. An appointment should be made for a conference.

Teachers are not permitted to take class time away from their students to hold a parent conference. Please do not show up at your child’s classroom in the morning and expect a conference. Teachers have many duties in the mornings as they are preparing for their day.

Our wish is to meet with you in a quiet, relaxed, private atmosphere to discuss your needs and concerns.

BORROWING OR EXCHANGING ITEMS

Students at this age frequently exchange, loan, or give away items at school. They later change their minds and want these items back. This “sharing” often results in lost or damaged items, hurt feelings, and sometimes, upset parents.  To avoid these problems, we discourage loaning between students.  The school cannot be responsible for these items or for straightening out these misunderstandings.  The only items to be brought to school are solely items for academic purposes.

CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS – The Big 3

  1. Do What’s Right
  2. Do Your Best
  3. Treat Others The Way You Want To Be Treated

DISCIPLINE

Good behavior is expected at Maplewood. Students will be rewarded for positive behavior and good citizenship through a variety of programs. When it becomes necessary for discipline, parents will be notified in order to plan strategies and interventions, share ideas, and discuss consequences. Our intent is to foster a sense of responsibility and respect among all of our students.

Students will be treated fairly and equally regardless of race or gender. Consequences will be determined on an individual basis. Parents may schedule conferences when necessary to discuss behavior problems. All students must behave in a manner that is conducive to a good learning environment.

Our school is participating in an important district initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports? PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

DRESS CODE

Students must dress in a way that is conducive to learning without the distractions of clothing issues.

These dress guidelines MUST be adhered to.

  • No hats of any kind, unless approved for special occasion
  • No shoes with wheels and/or skates may be worn on campus.
  • No tanks tops or spaghetti straps.
  • No alcohol, tobacco or inappropriate logos on any clothing.

If you do not wish for your child to participate in health screenings, please send a written note to the Principal on a yearly basis requesting your child be exempt.

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER

Our library/media center is a source of pride and is a vital part of our instructional program.  Students are encouraged to explore the many books, research materials, audio-visual materials, and computer software that our library has. In order to maintain an adequate collection, students, teachers and parents must cooperate to see that materials are returned in good condition. We also encourage you to help your child keep up with the books checked out. Students who lose or damage books will lose the privilege of checking out books until the fees for the book or books have been paid.

LOST AND FOUND

MEDICATION

FLORIDA STATE LAW MANDATES:

  1. ONLY prescription medicine in the original bottle with the patient’s full name, date, dosage, and method and time of administration may be given at school.
  2. ONLY when the official Parent Authorization form is filled out and on file in the office, will medication be administered.
  3. NO over the counter drugs are to be brought to school.
  4. NO medication is to be carried on the bus.
  5. Teachers will carry all medication on field trips.
  6. An asthmatic student shall be able to carry a metered dose inhaler on their person with approval from the parent and physician. The school will be provided a copy of the permission form with physician’s approval.
  7. Violation of rules regarding medication may result in disciplinary action.

TELEPHONES

Students are not permitted to utilize the telephone except for valid reasons. Please make arrangements with your child before leaving home regarding travel and after school activities.

Cell phones and similar wireless devices may be in the possession of students on campus and on the school bus but cannot be visible or activated during regular school hours. Use of a wireless communications device includes the possibility of the imposition of disciplinary action by the school and/or criminal penalties if the device is used in a criminal act. Using or possessing a wireless communication device to view, transfer or store material of a sexual nature is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct and may be a criminal act.  The unauthorized recording and/or photographing of employees, volunteers and/or students is prohibited.

CUSTODY SITUATIONS

In order to best serve the needs of the students of our school we use the following guidelines in dealing with divorce/separation issues. We are guided by the documents of the court, which outline restrictions involving the school and the student. Such documents must be signed by the court (judge). Documents that are not signed by the court cannot be considered legal and binding. Copies of documents must be provided to the school and shall be complete (contain all pages of the decree/order). Parents need to provide:

*Complete documents signed by the court

*Court documents as they are updated

When parents have “shared parental responsibility” the child is viewed as both parents retaining full parental responsibility with respect to their child (F.S. 61.046[11]). This might include such instances as:

*Equal access to the child’s records (including report cards)

*Equal access to the child

*Equal ability to sign out the child from school or designate another person of their choice to pick up the child

In instances of “sole parental responsibility,” as stipulated by the court, one parent makes decisions regarding matters of the minor child.  Schools are limited by the specifics of the court’s decree/order.

Parents bear the burden of communication between the school and each other regarding their child.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS/TELEPHONE NUMBER

It is very important that the school is able to get in touch with you in case of an emergency involving your child. Please update your information in SKYWARD when you have a change of telephone number, or any changes in people you have listed as your child’s emergency contacts. This can only be updated by you.  To change your address, you must come to the school with proof of residency.

Birthdays/Cupcakes

If parents would like to send in cupcakes to celebrate their child’s birthday, arrangements must be made with the teacher in advance. Parents will not be allowed in the cafeteria to pass out cupcakes as teachers are not on duty at lunch. Due to student allergies, homemade treats will not be allowed.

PE ATTIRE

Students in Grades K-5 will be engaging in daily physical activity through PE and recess and are REQUIRED to wear tennis shoes during this time.  Please send your child in tennis shoes everyday as it creates an inconvenience for both the teacher and child to have to change shoes before and after PE and/or recess.  Students not wearing appropriate shoes will not be allowed to participate.

TITLE I SCHOOLWIDE PARTICIPATION

We operate a school wide Title I, Part A program, which is the largest federally funded grant program for grades K-12.

The purpose of Title I, Part A is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and assessments. In addition to closing the achievement gap between high and low-performing children, minority and non-minority students, and disadvantaged children and their more advantaged peers for all to reach their fullest potential.

Activities supported with Title I, Part A funds must be planned based on a comprehensive needs assessment and developed in consultation with parents, teachers, principals, and other relevant stakeholders. The local educational agency (LEA) must also actively engage stakeholders in continued consultation to improve supported activities.

You will be invited to attend our Annual Title I Meeting that will explain how this program is used to support the needs of your child and the school goals. You will also receive information about the rights you have as a parent of a child attending a Title I school. We look forward to sharing this information and other exciting news at this meeting!

PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

Our school is committed to ensuring that meaningful consultation is ongoing between family members and school staff. When families engage with schools to support their students' learning, great things happen!

The Department of Education defines parent and family engagement as "Building relationships through activities such as helping parents and caregivers develop their skills, offering educational activities for families and students together, bringing family members into leadership positions…and connecting families with schools and resources in the community."

Our Parent and Family Engagement Plan is available by request through the school front office or for review at any time online at our website under Parents’ Corner/Parent Info. The District’s Title I Parent Engagement and Family Plan is available in the front office or at https://www.marionschools.net under “PARENTS, STUDENTS, AND COMMUNITY” then “Title I Resources” next “TITLE I PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PLAN” finally click on the appropriate language document.

NOTIFICATION OF TEACHERS “CERTIFICATION”

Schools are required to provide timely notice to each individual parent that their child has been assigned to or taught for FOUR or more consecutive weeks by a teacher or substitute who is not state certified. You will be provided this notification if this applies to your child at any point throughout the school year.

“RIGHT TO KNOW NOTIFICATION”

As a parent, you have the right to know the professional qualifications for the classroom teacher and/or paraprofessional who instructs your child.  The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) allows you to ask to receive information about certification(s)/credential(s) and can you request this information at any time. Requests can be made by contacting our front office and asking for a Parent’s Right-To-Know Request form.

SCHOOLWIDE IMPROVEMENT PLAN (SIP)

The SIP is a tool used by stakeholders to review data, set goals, progress monitor, and create action plans. The most recent version of our Schoolwide Improvement Plan is available by request through the school front office or for review at any time online at https://www.floridacims.org/districts/marion. You may also visit https://edudata.fldoe.org to view the State, District & School Report Card at any time. Current information regarding Florida School Grades and School Accountability can be viewed at https://www.fldoe.org/accountability/accountability-reporting/school-grades.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)

People from several groups are welcome to join our SAC committee, including parents, students, community members, business partners, and school staff. Certain SAC members are elected by their peers, business and community members are appointed and the principal automatically serves. The SAC reviews issues of a school wide nature, helps to create and review the effectiveness of the School-Parent Compact, the Parent and Family Engagement Plan for both the school and district, and reviews the annual Schoolwide Improvement Plan. SAC meetings fall under the Sunshine Law which are always open to the public. Your input matters and we encourage you to join our SAC committee by notifying the front office. SAC meeting minutes and other related information are available to review by contacting our front office or webpage.

PARENT OPPORTUNITY TO REQUEST MEETINGS

Parent-Teacher Conferences may be scheduled when the need arises at the request of either the parent or the teacher. Parents may schedule a conference by writing a note or e-mail to the teacher or calling the front office to set up a time with their child’s teacher. By scheduling a conference, the teacher can prepare individual reports, papers, etc., regarding your child to improve the sharing of information during the conference. During planned instructional time, teachers are working hard on supporting students to master state standards and are not allowed to conference with parents. We encourage all parents to set up and attend at least one conference per quarter.

SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

Each Title I school must collaborate with parents to develop an agreement that clearly outlines the responsibilities and commitment that the parents, entire school staff, and student will share. This document is known as the School-Parent Compact and assists with building and developing a partnership to help students achieve the State’s high academic standards.

The School-Parent Compact is a living document, signed by the school, staff, and parent, that will be used throughout the year as parents and school staff communicate about the progress and growth of your child.

Please see your child’s teacher if you have not yet received a School-Parent Compact. If you would like to provide suggestions or input about the compact, please contact the school.

TITLE I PARENT RESOURCES
